Rheum officinale Baill

Common Name: Rhubarb, Chinese rubarb

Family: Polygonaceae

Part Used: Root

Description: A leafy perennial with large leaves arsing directly by thick fleshy stalks from underground vertical rhizomes with fleshy, spreading roots; enormous panicles of inconspicuous white to dark purple flowers followed by winged fruit. It is larger than garden rhubarb. Native to north-western China and Tibet. 

Constituents: Anthraquinone glycosides

 Action: Astrigent, purgative, laxative, stomachic, antiseptic (GIT), anti-inflammatory, anti-inflammatory (GIT) and (UTI), anti-haemorrhagic (systemic), renal tonic

Nutritional ingredients: 26% vitamin k and good source of fiber

Suggested use as a Traditional Herbal Remedies Only: short term treatment of occasional constipation and liver congestion.

Suggested dosage:  add 20-30 drops, 1-2 times a day in a little fruit juice or water with food or as directed by your health care practitioner. The use in children under 12 years of age has not been recommended due to lack of adequate data. Keep out of reach of children.

Dosage (Dry herb): 1g-3g per day.

Fertility, Pregnancy and Lactation: Safety during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. In the absence of sufficient data, the use during pregnancy and lactation is not recommended.

Contraindications:  (seek GP and Professional Medical Herbalist)

Cautions: Do not administer to people with a known sensitivity to plants in the (Polygonaceae) family. Short term use only ( 1-2 weeks).

Side Effects: GI irritation
