Description: The
bark of a large tree (up to 30 minters) with alternate stiff oblong or ovate
leaves with serrated margins and small white flower growing in lateral racemes,
the bark is rough and nearly black on older trunks, but that used is younger,
smooth and glassy and reddish-brown, with white lenticels, with underlying
greenish-brown cortex. The taste is astringent and bitter almonds when wet and
habitat in woods through eastern, central and northern North America.
Constituents:
Cyanogenic glycosides, volatile oil, coumarins, tannins
Action:
Expectorant, antispasmodic (respiratory tract), antitussive, astringent,
sedative.

Suggested
use as a Traditional Herbal Remedies: Used for irritable and
painful cough when increasing expectoration is inappropriate, to the racking or
exhausting cough of debility or convalescence.
Indications: Bronchitis, cough, pertussis, nervous dyspepsia.

Herbal Pharmacopeia indications (BHP): Persistent cough, pertussis, and nervous
dyspepsia. Specific indication; irritable and persistent cough of bronchitis,
cough due to increased irritability of respiratory mucosa, pertussis.
Suggested
dosage: Add 1-2 teaspoon of herbs to a teapot and stir, cover
and leave the tea stand for 10 - 20 minutes, strain and drink one to two times
a day. The use in children under 12 years of age has not been recommended due
to lack of adequate data. Keep
out of reach of children.
Dosage (Dry herb): 1g-4g per day.
