Description: The root and possibly leaves of a substantial biennial plant up to 2 meters in height, with very large ovate-cordate leaves up to 50cm across forming a rosette at ground level, with smaller versions growing up the thick flowering stem; the flower are borne in clusters at the top of the stem, globular in shape and covered with a dense array of stiff hooked bracts that cling to clothes on contact; the long root runs straight down as much as a meter into the subsoil. Habitat on roadside and waste place and around filed borders throughout Britain, Europe and North America.

Constituents: Flavonoid glycosides, antibiotic, bitter glycosides, alkaloids, fixed oil, essential oil, condensed tannins, inulin, resin, PABA, mucilage.

Action: Alterative, anti-inflammatory, aperient, depurative, diuretic, mild laxative.

Nutritional ingredients: In Japan, roots are used as a vegetable called gobo. The root contains 11% protein, 19% lipids, and 34% inulin.

Suggested use as a Traditional Herbal Remedies: Root; blood purifier (alterative) to treat skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis), cancer, arthritis, and obesity. Burdock root is one of four ingredients in the “Cancer formula” known as Essiac. Mild diuretic and laxative. Used to stimulate lymphatic circulation, especially with chronically enlarge lymph nodes, mastitis, and lymphedema.

Indications: Eczema, Psoriasis, Urticaria, Acne, Boils, Gout, Arthritis.

Suggested dosage: Add 1-3 teaspoon of herbs to a teapot and stir, cover and leave the tea stand for 10 - 30 minutes in 220ml of hot water, strain and drink one to two times a day. The use in children under 12 years of age has not been recommended due to lack of adequate data. Keep out of reach of children.

Dosage (Dry herb): 2g-12g per day.

Qualities: Bitter, cooling.

Fertility, Pregnancy and Lactation: Safety during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. In the absence of sufficient data, the use during pregnancy and lactation is not recommended.

Toxicity: Dry herb is safe in normal (recommended) therapeutic doses.

Side Effects: Milky latex in leaves may cause contact dermatitis; bitter

Known Drug interaction: Use cautiously with insulin or oral anti-diabetic agents because of possible increased hypoglycaemia.
